FORKLIFT OPERATOR TRAINING REQUIREMENTS - IBA Document 2713 Prepared by: Independent Business Association - 6/00
Both Washington and federal safety and health laws require that all operators of forklifts (industrial powered truck) be fully trained on the proper operation of the vehicle before they may operate the vehicle. Current workers must have already received this training also. Written documentation that the training was provided is required. The training has 3 major components Classroom - meaning verbal, text-book, computer, etc. instructions Practical training - the trainer demonstrates the proper use of the forklift Evaluation - the trainee operates the forklift while the trainer observes and evaluates whether the trainee is operating the forklift properly
An employer can assign any person, which the employer determines is competent to operate a forklift, to provide the training. The trainer does not have to be "certified".
Employers are urged to review the entire rule prior to implementing any forklift training to ensure they fully understand all of the requirements of the rule.
